Team Sunderland Women’s 2-2 Sheffield University Women’s 2nd’s

Team Sunderland continued their unbeaten start to the season by playing out a 2-2 draw at home against Sheffield University.

The away side took the lead in the 30th minute before Sunderland reacted well and pulled themselves level just three minutes later.

Sunderland took the lead for the first time in the 65th minute before being pegged back by the Yorkshire side in the 68th minute.

Sunderland were looking to build on a two nil win against local rivals Newcastle on the opening day of the season meanwhile Sheffield were looking to bounce back from a defeat against Durham University thirds.

After a slow start to the game Sunderland began to grow into the contest but were dealt a blow after 30 minutes when the visitors hit them with a devastating counter attack down the left flank. Despite the initial shot being saved, the ball fell to Sheffield striker Maddie Batchelor who had a simple tap in to give her side the lead.

Sunderland reacted quickly to this setback three minutes later when a goal kick was flicked on by forward Jess Kelly to put strike partner Megan Wheeler through on goal and she made no mistake as she emphatically fired past the Sheffield goalkeeper.

Wheeler had another chance just minutes later to turn the game round but the striker saw her shot sail wide.

The second half continued in a similar fashion, Sunderland knocking the ball around with great confidence with the Yorkshire side also causing problems on the break.

The home side got themselves in front after 65 minutes when a corner from Rosie Lumsden was headed into her own net by the Sheffield centre back.

Batchelor got her second goal of the game just three minutes later when Sheffield once again hit the home side on break and brought the scores level with a slick attacking move.

Sunderland will look to return to winning ways in their next Women’s Northern Tier 3B game against Sheffield Hallam 2nd’s – a side coming off the back of a strong three nil win against Durham Uni thirds.
