WorldWCR: Dorna’s Answer to a female talent series is a brilliant one
Dorna finally answered fans calls for a F1 academy style bike racing series in 2024 and what they came up with has come up trumps.
WorldWCR (world women’s circuit racing) uses the Yamaha YZF-R7 across the board which provides close and tight pack racing with most races finishing with a gap of less than half a second between the top 2.
Most expected the Championship in the series first year to be between Maria Herrera who has Moto2 & MotoE experience and Ana Carrasco who is the only FIM female world champion as she won WSSP300 back in 2018.
However other riders have come through during the year with Beatriz Neila and Sara Sánchez fighting for race wins as well.
Season highlights have been Herrera’s last to second ride at Estoril and the amazing final lap battle in Race two at Portimao.
However the season has had moments of controversy such as the penultimate corner of the race in Cremona when Sanchez took out Herrera.
The bikes the riders use has also brought problems with the crash that Mia Rushten had in the first race at Misano which put her in a coma (has now recovered and hopefully will ride in 2025) and the crashes and injures that full-time British rider Lissy Whitmore suffered at Donington and Cremona.
2025 should be exciting too as the finale at Jerez features future hopefuls such as Chloe Jones who guested with GR motorsport and finished with P6 in both races as well as running in the podium places in Race 2.
This debut season of WorldWCR has for shown the championship has room to grow as well as that it can produce great racing from the beginning.
