Local boxer becomes five-time National champion

Local amateur boxer Layla Straughan was crowned a five-time National champion with a split decision victory over Brooke Taylor.

North Star’s Straughan came into this bout with a record of 14 wins and three losses, while Brooke came in with a record of zero wins and one loss. The fight was sanctioned as a straight final for both girls due to a lack of competition.

Round one began with minimal action with both competitors being cautious of one another, both trying to build off of their jabs but there was little success as rarely a combination would follow the jab.

Round two picked up with more clashes between the two occurring with Taylor being the aggressor. However Straughan successfully countered all forward attempts from Taylor while still attempting to establish her own jab.

The final round saw Straughan under more successful pressure from Taylor and this time round it was looking like Taylor could have stopped Straughan as it appeared the North Star boxer was growing tired as the round progressed.

The bout ended as a 3-2 split decision to Straughan sementing herself as a five-time National champion, bringing her record to 15 wins and three loses.
