Takeaways from WrestleMania 41 (Night 2)

WrestleMania 41 was not without its headlines and controversial moments. Night two of the WWE’s biggest event had quality in-ring action but a disappointing finale to the biggest weekend fans look forward to all year round.

John Cena makes history

In 2017 John Cena tied “Nature Boy” Ric Flair for the record of winning 16 World Championships. On WrestleMania Sunday following a win over Cody Rhodes, Cena broke the record for most Championship’s.

In doing that he made history and it was the right decision for Cena to win because fans get to see what a heel Cena can do as the WWE Champion and not to mention in doing so, you are getting Cody to go back into chase mode ala 2023 when he was coming off the loss against Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

So, whilst Cena gets to have a different ending on his farewell tour and being able to rekindle matches with some of his greatest rivals, in which plenty of people will eat up. You also have Rhodes in the background, who is going to build an even bigger uproar with the fans and quite possibly go into history as the greatest babyface in professional wrestling.

 Triple Threat was great opener

If you aren’t going on last, then you would want to go on first. The crowd is red hot then; they are still full of energy and are ready to go for whatever is first on the card.

Rhea Ripley, Iyo Sky and Bianca Belair all went out there and delivered an electric opener and delivered one of the greatest openers to a WrestleMania show, some people say it should have been the main event and they had a right to debate that, but triple threat matches stole the show all over the weekend and the Women’s World Championship match is right up there as one of the greatest.

Bayley cut at Becky’s expense

So, on the countdown to WrestleMania they ran an injury angle with Bayley getting injured and Lyra Valkyria was left to find a partner.

To no surprise, Becky Lynch made her triumphant return, and the fans erupted who were eager to see her back. However she was put in at Bayley’s expense, who has been one of the hard-working female talents on the roster.

She had been putting in the work for her Mania match and promoting it, only for her to not be in it at the end.  If it has been penciled in for several weeks, then this is a massive misstep and shrewd move from WWE, something you’d sometimes see from the old regime.

Now it looks like we could be getting a Lynch vs Bayley feud, with the roles reversed this time around, this doesn’t exactly spark excitement at this moment in time due to the fact we have already seen them go at it, for what was quite an extended period.

So, we wait and see for what could be different this time around.

Joe Hendry gets WrestleMania moment

The rise of Joe Hendry is remarkable, from being one of the acts lower on the card to getting his song to become a wildly popular meme and gets him all the way to being a surprise opponent at WrestleMania.

Randy Orton needed a challenger due to Kevin Owens’ severe neck injury and well say his name and he appears. As say his name and appears rung out of Allegiant Stadium, everyone erupted for the TNA World Heavyweight Champion.

It wasn’t the longest of matches, but it didn’t have to be because Hendry was sold as to why he was put into that spot, not to mention Orton was having fun in the ring, it was the perfect five minutes of fun, any longer and I am not so sure it has the same impact, Hendry got a Mania moment.

Dominik Mysterio beloved by the WrestleMania crowd

From getting booed out of the building for the best part of two years, on WrestleMania Sunday Dominik Mysterio entered Allegiant stadium with the most positive reactions. Not a single fan was booing the second generation superstar, but instead treated him like a babyface.

He got a WrestleMania moment in winning the Intercontinental Championship, celebrating in front of 62,000 fans in attendance. Now what it means for the rest of the year going forward remains to be seen, could we see a change in Mysterio being the good guy due to the nature of the crowd reactions? .

It’s a situation that’s going to be worth looking at over the next couple of weeks or months even.

Bron Breakker ready for the step up

Breakker is no longer Intercontinental Champion, and it means only one thing, he’s ready to make the move up.

He’s done the proving ground in NXT, and he has shown the materials he is able to provide during his Intercontinental Championship run. The amount of speed that he runs at and the way he makes such a spear look devestating to his opponent.

He has even got the fans chanting and won them over so quickly, he is the next big star and ready to be working alongside the main event talent, because it’s now seeing what he can do at the upper level, and it starts with working with upper main event talent.

It’s only a matter of time before Breakker is holding up a World Championship on either Raw or SmackDown.

Main event fails to stick the landing

Despite the surprises and cool moments of night two, the main event between Rhodes and Cena failed to deliver the surprise element. Many fans expected to see an appearance from “The Final Boss” The Rock but instead were treated to Travis Scott.

WrestleMania is meant to have dramatic or happy endings that fans feeling stunned, shocked and or amazed but instead Cena’s 17th title win felt anti-climatic, with the match not able to provide enough drama either due to the ring rust on display by Cena.

With Scott being the only interference and not many fans caring for his presence, it presented a negative outlook on otherwise a great second night for WWE’s biggest show.
