Heaton Stannington end season on a high with survival guranteed
Heaton Stannington 2-1 North Ferriby
With survival assured, Heaton Stannington ended their Northern Premier League season on a high with goals from Jay Errington in the 45th minute and Andrew Burn in the 85th, despite an early 22nd-minute lead from North Ferriby’s Jack Johnson.
The home side came into the game on the back of a 1-0 win away to Ashington, which assured their safety for another season. Ferriby’s last result was a 0-0 draw against league winners Cleethorpes.
Stan had the first shot on target inside 20 minutes as Errington forced a save from Ben Bottomley.
Nine minutes later, Ferriby scored as Brad Williams delivered a ball into the box for Johnson, who nodded at the back post.
Ferriby nearly scored a second as Johnson dinked it over Matthew Cassap and was through on goal, but the ball edged wide of the post.
The first half neared a close, Stan controlled possession, troubled Bottomley and the Ferriby defence. Burn got down the left side and got the shot away, but Bottomley deflected it off the post.
A goal came for Stan, on the brink of half time, Errington received the ball inside the box and slotted it away.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Connor Walker received the ball on the edge of the box and tried to bend one in, but Bottomley tipped it over.
Ten minutes later, a free kick was awarded to Burn, who scored from 30 yards out, as the ball went past Bottomley’s left side.
The Stan had a chance for a third but Hooper’s heavy touch on the ball meant the shot got away from him.
The referee’s full time whistle was met with cheers from the home fans as Heaton Stannington finish the season strongly in their first year at this level.
