Preview: Newcastle United vs Brighton

Newcastle United host Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Eight points separate the two sides going into this match, with Brighton currently sitting in sixth place, with a strong chance of securing European qualification for next season.

Newcastle sit 15th and could possibly find themselves in a relegation battle to end the season.

Last time out –

The two sides have very contrasting form coming into this match, with Brighton being unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches. Fabian Hurzeler’s side comfortably dispatched a poor Chelsea side 3-0 in their previous game.

As for the Magpies, they come into this match in their worst form under Eddie Howe’s tenure as Newcastle United manager. They have lost their last four Premier League games, and their last five games in all competitions.

Last time out, they were beaten 1-0 by league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Previous Meetings –

Newcastle have notoriously struggled against Brighton since both teams were promoted to the Premier League in 2017, winning just two of their 17 meetings.

A brace by Danny Welbeck in October was enough to secure the Seagulls a 2-1 victory over Eddie Howe’s side.

A beautiful flick finish from Newcastle forward man Nick Woltemade was not enough for the Magpies on that day.

Team News –

Hurzeler’s side will be without Premier League record appearance maker James Milner in this match due to a muscle injury.

While Howe’s side will be without fullback Valentino Livramento due to his latest injury.

Winger Anthony Gordon has a chance of making the match, having missed the previous two games with injury.

Joelinton returns to the squad after a suspension.

Players to watch –

Striker and top scorer Danny Welbeck will be one to watch after his brace against Newcastle earlier this season, while former Magpie winger Yankuba Minteh will look to continue his impressive goal scoring form against his former team.

Newcastle captain and Premier League top scorer Bruno Guimaraes is back to full fitness and is always a threat for Eddie Howe’s men.

Kickoff from St James’ Park is at 3pm on Saturday afternoon as both sides look for a vital three points.
