South Shields Women vs Harrogate Town Women: Match Preview and Behind the Scenes
South Shields Women host winless Harrogate Town Women at 1st Cloud Arena this Sunday (2pm kick-off).
A win would put Shields in a strong position to finish the NERWFL Premier Division campaign in third place with just a few fixtures remaining.
The visitors currently have a goal difference of -71 and sit on -6 points, having lost every league game so far this season in addition to a points deduction given earlier on.
Jade Dryden’s goal separated the two sides back in September for the season opener as Shields came out 1-0 winners.
Coaches’ views
Player/coach Alex Miller says the girls are relishing the opportunity of playing at 1st Cloud Arena.
She said: “The first question the lasses ask each season is ‘when will we be playing at 1st Cloud?’.
“It means so much to the team and they genuinely look forward to it.
“It definitely makes us feel much more at home and reinforces that we are part of such an amazing club.”
Miller also reflected on opponents Harrogate who sit bottom of the league, and stressed the significance of not underestimating them.
“Harrogate are a hardworking team from our previous experience of playing them,” she continued.
“It’s important that we respect Harrogate, as no team is going to travel to a venue such as 1st Cloud and allow us to walk all over them.
“They’ve signed a few more players so no doubt that will have strengthened their squad.
“However, I always tell the girls, focus on our own football and the rest will be fine.”
It is more important than ever that fans come to cheer the girls on, as second place is still up for grabs.
MIller added: “With the men’s exceptional season coming to an end very soon, attending the women’s games provides an ideal opportunity for any fans still wanting their South Shields football fix.
“We’ve got a battle for 2nd place going on, so we’d appreciate all the support we can get to help us end the season on a high!”
