Newcastle 0 West Ham 2: Irons strike twice to overcome Magpies

West Ham struck twice at St James’ Park to secure their second win on the road in the Premier League beating Newcastle United 2-0.

Tomas Soucek’s ninth-minute header gave the Irons the lead before Aaron Wan-Bissaka doubled their advantage in the 54th minute.

Newcastle went into Monday’s clash coming off two impressive victories over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest before the international break. They hoped to extend their run of form against a West Ham side yet to find their groove in the Premier League this season.

The Magpies thought they had the lead five minutes in after Isak’s cool chip over Lukasz Fabianski but the linesman’s flag denied the goal.

West Ham responded in next to no time when their ninth-minute corner found the head of Soucek who gave the Hammers the lead.

Carlos Soler came close to doubling West Ham’s advantage as a clever team move from the Irons set up the Spaniard to curl his effort just shy of the top corner.

Isak came close to equalising in the 40th minute when he brought Bruno Guimaraes’ cross down and struck on the half-volley but his strike was the wrong side of the target.

Jarrod Bowen’s audacious strike nearly gave West Ham a two-goal cushion going into the break but Nick Pope managed to keep it out.

The Hammers eventually extended their lead thanks to Wan-Bissaka’s close-range finish nine minutes after the restart.

Shouts for a Newcastle penalty fell on deaf ears as substitute Callum Wilson was brought down by Kontantinos Mavropands in the box on 74 minutes.

The Irons held on through the six minutes of additional time to secure their second away win of the season.
