Jos Buttler resigns as England white ball captain
Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white ball captain after leading his side’s disastrous Champions Trophy campaign.
Buttler’s side were knocked out of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday after falling to an eight-run defeat to Afghanistan. That defeat meant England have lost 15 of their last 21 ODI matches, including their last six.
Despite stepping down as captain, Buttler will still lead England on Saturday as they play their final game of the Champions Trophy against South Africa and the 34-year-old is expected to carry on playing for his country after the tournament.
England won Buttler’s first white ball tournament as captain, lifting the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, since then England’s defence of the One-Day World Cup and that T20 crown have been disappointing.
Overall Buttler won 18 of his 44 ODI matches as captain but did fair slightly better in T20 cricket, winning 26 games out of 51.
England will name Buttler’s replacement in due course with Harry Brook appearing to be the early favourite for the role whilst the likes of Ben Duckett and Liam Livingstone are also thought to be in the running.
