Match Report: Yarm & Eaglescliffe 2-0 Seaham Red Star

Yarm & Eaglescliffe ran out comfortable winners in a play-off semi-final against Seaham Red Star on Saturday, booking themselves a home final against Jarrow and ending The Star’s season.

Cameron Wild’s header and Joseph Dalton’s strike sealed all three points for Yarm & Eaglescliffe.

The visitors were hoping to pull off an upset on enemy territory after finishing 19 points behind the hosts in the regular season.

Both teams were evenly matched throughout the first half, with neither ‘keeper being tested in a scrappy affair.

The first half’s highlight was when Red Star had the ball in the net; long after referee, Daniel Forbes, had blown for a foul.

The Star will have gone into the break fancying themselves, as despite not laying a glove in the first half, neither had their opponents.

Stephen Jackson’s side were much improved in the second half, and after 68 minutes, the home side managed to find the all-important opener.

A controversial free-kick was awarded under the nose of the enraged Seaham manager, Mark Collingwood, with the set-play was launched to the far post where Wild headed home.

14 minutes later, the hosts doubled their lead through Dalton, who swept home after a fast break found him in the centre of the box.

If that wasn’t bad enough for the visitors, Jamie McCloud injured himself in his attempt to block Dalton’s shot and had to be replaced.

The game fizzled out, seeing the hosts’ progress to a play-off final at Bedford Terrace next Saturday, whilst Seaham Red Star’s turbulent campaign finally had a full stop.

Red Star assistant, Michael Johnson, told club media: “I think we were the better team for 90 minutes.

“There was only one team that played football, the best footballing side lost today and sometimes that happens.”
